The bridge that connects Mount Pleasant to Sullivan’s Island and vice versa is finally going to be replaced. The 62 year old Ben Sawyer Bridge has gone through a lot including some-what surviving Hurricane Hugo (’89) when its foundation was torn off & it was turned at an angle pointing to the sky. The bridge was closed for three weeks after the storm.
The projected is expected to cost $35 million and will take 2 years. They expect to begin in fall of 2008. During this time, the bridge will be closed approx. a week so that a new steel superstructure can be put on top of the existing piers. In addition, the piers will be strengthened in case of an earthquake. (Hopefully that doesn’t occur for 100 years!)
In the end, the bridge will be widened and there will be a bike land (yeah!–no more walking your bike across the narrow sidewalk!).
The state will fund 20% of the cost of the project and the federal government will pick up the rest.
