Coastal Carolina Homeowners No Longer Have Insurance
on January 29th, 2007 at 8:00 pmSeveral Coastal Carolina residents received notification from their homeowner insurance company that their insurance was cancelled according to Sunday’s (January 28, 2007) NBC news report (Channel 2). According to the news report, “Several Isle of Palms residents say they have been dropped by their insurance companies because they live too close to the coast.
Most people received letters cancelling home insurance policies. Several insurance companies are worried a major hurricane will come through and cause extensive damage, so they’re canceling coverage to many coastal residents. Rosalie Juras says of her letter of cancellation, “No warning. It was simply cancelled 30 days from the date of the letter.” With a single letter, Juras found out her home of nearly 15 years would no longer be insured.
“It was really very scary. That’s the best way I can put it. I worried,” Juras said. Then, worry turned to anger and frustration. Juras said, “I’ve paid my policy for years and been with the same company for years. We’ve met more than the requirements needed for living on the beach.”
You can see the Atlantic Ocean from Juras’ window, but she says the house has adequate protection. It’s elevated higher than FEMA’s requirements and has storm shutters and hurricane proof windows. Juras said, “There has to be some reasonable formula applied to this.”
The Isle of Palms resident says coastal home coverage should be granted on an individual basis, not as a whole. Juras says in exchange for coverage, she would be willing to provide further storm protection for her beloved home. She told News 2, “This is as close to paradise as you will get before you die.” That paradise warrants insurance protection, according to the avid beach-goer.
“This is what we’ve worked toward. We feel we earned it. Nobody gave it to us. It is very frustrating to think we could lose it that easily. If we don’t have insurance and can’t get insurance, who will buy this house? No one would want to buy a house they can’t insure.” Now, the Juras family, as well as many Isle of Palms residents, are searching for answers and insurance coverage on the coast.
Juras found Johnson and Johnson Insurance Company to cover her home, but many residents are still searching.
However, coastal coverage covers more than beach-front property. Some residents in Mount Pleasant have received cancellation notices from their insurance companies.”
