“Save Isle of Palms” Editorial by Channel 2 News
on February 4th, 2007 at 6:47 amChannel 2 News Charleston featured a story yesterday (Saturday, February 3, 2007) entitlaed, “Save Isle of Palms.” I went online to see if they posted it & they did. Here it is:
“The Isle of Palms is becoming the next Myrtle Beach, according to several Isle of Palms residents. A group of residents started “Save the Isle of Palms” to make sure that change does not take place.
With each bumper sticker or yard sign, the grassroots group, Save the Isle of Palms wants to make a statement. They’re opposing the increasing amount of short-term rentals on the Isle of Palms.
Save IOP’s Catherine Malloy said, “Something has to be done with the current situation.” Malloy is tired of seeing livable neighborhood homes torn down to make room for giant structures, capable of sleeping 30 people per night. She says renting out a home for tourists or company retreats is fine…in moderation.
“It’s just overwhelming neighborhoods and where people live,” Malloy sad.
People, like Mary Pringle. The IOP resident grabbed signs for herself and a few neighbors. Pringle says the island is a special place to live…and she wants to keep it that way. She told News 2′s Jenny Fisher, “Very large short-term rentals are disrupting the quality of life of people who have always lived here.” Jenny asked, “What do you mean by disrupting?” Pringle replied, “We can’t sleep at night. We’re bothered by the trash and the noise and it’s not safe to have too many people in a certain size house.”
That’s why save the Isle of Palmers are calling on city government for change…and accountability. Malloy said, “There is zoning on the books, laws on the books, that prohibit the incursion of these structures into residential areas because these areas are zoned single family.”
So until the problem’s addressed, each passing car represents an opportunity residents can’t pass up to ensure the Isle of Palms does not become the Isle of Development.
Save IOP advocates plan to attend the city council meeting on February 22nd. You can visit their website at: www.saveiop.com. ”
